General Elizardo Aquino is a district and town in San Pedro department, on Route PY22 about 25 km from Rosario. It was founded on 16 October 1898 by Italian immigrants from Sicily who arrived by boat at Puerto Rosario, and was originally known as Colonia Trinacria for their homeland. It was later renamed for Colonel José Elizardo Aquino Jara (1825–1866), a Paraguayan officer from Luque who died in combat at the Battle of Paso Pucú during the War of the Triple Alliance. The town has around 17,000 residents (2022 census), an agricultural and livestock-based economy, and is locally known as the "City of Friendship."
