Union

San Pedro, Paraguay

Why visit Union?

Unión is a district in San Pedro department, about 137 km from Asunción, founded on 18 February 1837 by Pedro Benítez under the name Capilla Unión. Its name dates to the era of dictator José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, when ox-cart drivers hauling yerba mate from state-run plantations made an obligatory stop at a place called Buey Rodeo to change teams of oxen — at times as many as 2,000 yoke gathered there — making it a "union point" for cart drivers, from which the district takes its name. Many of the earliest settlers are believed to have come from Villarrica, and some neighborhoods still carry a distinctive Guaireño accent as a result.
