Tacuati
San Pedro, Paraguay
Why visit Tacuati?
Tacuatí, in San Pedro department about 213 km from Asunción, is one of the older settlements in the region: it was founded on 24 September 1799 (the feast day of Our Lady of Mercy) by Fray Marcos Mancuello as a mission reducing the local Guaná-Layana, Charavaná, and other indigenous groups, with Layana chief José Antonio Zuicá baptized as part of the founding. These groups, collectively sometimes called Tacuatí, gave the settlement its name and were historically in conflict with the Mbayá and Payaguá peoples. On the banks of the nearby Ypané River, the area preserves rock carvings and the ruins of an old temple from this indigenous and mission-era history. The district celebrated 122 years since its formal districting in 2025.
