Itacurubi del Rosario

San Pedro, Paraguay

Why visit Itacurubi del Rosario?

Itacurubí del Rosario, in San Pedro department about 200 km from Asunción, was founded on 21 June 1787 by commander Roque de Acosta Freire on the orders of Pedro Melo de Portugal. The district covers about 997 km² and has around 10,500 residents (2022 census). Its economy is built on agriculture and ranching — sesame, maize, rice, and soy are notable crops — and it is home to the Mennonite colony of Friesland. Known locally as the "Ciudad del Trigo" (Wheat City) for hosting the launch of Paraguay's first national wheat-promotion program in 1968, the town preserves a number of well-kept colonial-era houses in its historic center.
