Why visit Dhankuta?
Dhankuta is a historic hill town perched at an elevation of 1,200 m in the Mahabharata Range, serving as the district headquarters of Dhankuta District and a traditional trading centre on the route between the Terai and the Mount Everest region. The town offers sweeping views of the Himalayan range from Everest to Makalu on clear days and retains a charming old-town character with winding stone streets and traditional Newari-style buildings.
Dhankuta has a mild subtropical highland climate with warm summers and cool winters. The best time to visit is from September to November for clear skies and mountain views, or March to May for blooming rhododendrons. The town is compact and walkable, centred around the historic bazaar area.
