Zao

Miyagi, Japan

Why visit Zao?

Zao (蔵王, also written as Zaō) is an area spanning the border between Miyagi Prefecture and Yamagata Prefecture, known for the spectacular Zao mountain range and its year-round attractions. The Miyagi side of Zao includes the Onsenji area at the base of the mountains and the Zao Echo Line — a scenic mountain road leading to the highland plateau.

The Zao range is most famous for the Zao Okama (御釜), a stunning crater lake with emerald-green water, and the Zao Juhyo (ice monsters) — trees covered in heavy snow and ice formations that create an otherworldly winter landscape. The area also has a major ski resort, excellent hiking, and numerous hot springs.

The climate features cool summers and extremely cold, snowy winters. The best times to visit are winter (January-February) for the ice monsters and skiing, summer (July-August) for hiking, and autumn (September-October) for foliage.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Sendai Airport (SDJ) is the nearest major airport, about 1.5-2 hours away from the Miyagi side.

By Train

The nearest station is Kaminoyama Onsen (Yamagata side) or Sendai (for the Miyagi side, followed by bus). From Sendai Station, take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen to Yamagata Station (about 1 hour), then a bus to Zao Onsen.

By Car / Road

Driving from Sendai takes about 1.5 hours via the Tohoku Expressway (or Route 286) and the Zao Echo Line. The Echo Line (toll road) is a spectacular mountain drive.

A rental car is the most practical way to explore Zao, especially for reaching the Okama crater and trailheads. Buses run from Zao Onsen to the main sights during peak season. The Zao Ropeway and chairlifts access the upper slopes.
