Akiu Onsen
Miyagi, Japan
Why visit Akiu Onsen?
Akiu Onsen (秋保温泉) is one of the most accessible and historic hot spring resorts in Tohoku, set in a wooded river valley in the western part of Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. Despite lying within the city limits of Sendai, it feels a world away — a quiet spread of ryokan and bathhouses along the Natori River, surrounded by hills. The springs here have a very long history and are traditionally counted among the celebrated hot springs of Japan, with patronage by feudal lords stretching back centuries.
Akiu's appeal is the combination of relaxed onsen bathing and easy access to genuine natural scenery within a short drive of a major city. The valley is also home to a craft tradition, the Akiu style of kokeshi dolls. The area works well both as a half-day excursion from Sendai and as an overnight base for a more leisurely soak-and-stroll itinerary.
The resort is pleasant year-round. Spring brings fresh greenery, autumn is especially prized for the foliage in the river gorges, and winter offers the classic experience of bathing outdoors in the snow. Summers are humid but the riverside setting keeps things comfortable.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
The nearest airport is Sendai Airport (SDJ). From the airport, take the Sendai Airport Access Line to Sendai Station and continue to Akiu by bus or taxi (see below). Allow roughly 1.5 hours in total.
By Train
Akiu Onsen has no railway station of its own. Travellers arrive at Sendai Station, which is served by the Tohoku Shinkansen and numerous conventional lines, and then transfer to a bus or taxi for the final leg into the valley.
By Car / Road
Akiu Onsen is a short drive — on the order of 30–40 minutes — west of central Sendai, and is the most convenient way to reach the valley. Roads are good. Buses also run from Sendai towards the Akiu area.
The resort strings along the Natori River valley, and lodgings are spread out rather than clustered, so a car is the easiest way to move between the onsen district, the waterfall and the gorge. Within an individual ryokan area, walking is fine. There is no metro or tram. Many ryokan offer shuttle pick-ups from Sendai Station for guests — confirm when booking.
What are the things to do?
Akiu Great Falls (秋保大滝, Akiu Otaki) — One of Japan's notable waterfalls, a broad 55-metre cascade on the Natori River, with a viewpoint and surrounding parkland; particularly striking in autumn foliage season.
Rairai Gorge (磊々峡, Rairaikyo) — A short, scenic river gorge near the heart of the onsen district, with a walking trail along sculpted rock formations.
Soak in the hot springs — the main draw — at one of the area's many ryokan, several of which open their baths to day visitors.
Walk the riverside trail through Rairai Gorge and visit Akiu Great Falls for an easy half-day of nature.
Explore the Akiu kokeshi craft tradition and look out for workshops in the valley where the dolls are made.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Dining in Akiu is centred on the ryokan, which typically serve elaborate multi-course dinners featuring Miyagi produce and seafood. The area is also well known for Akiu-style sasakamaboko and other fish-cake snacks, and for "marketplace" complexes selling local foods near the onsen district.
Where to drink?
Tap water throughout Japan, including Akiu, is safe to drink. Miyagi is a strong sake-producing region, and local sake pairs well with a ryokan dinner.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to stay?
Akiu is, above all, a ryokan resort, and the accommodation itself is much of the reason to come.
- Mid-range: Smaller ryokan and inns along the Natori River offer onsen stays with dinner and breakfast.
- Upscale / heritage: Several large, well-regarded onsen ryokan operate in the valley, some with long histories of hosting visitors.
What should you buy?
The local craft to look for is the Akiu kokeshi, a regional style of Japan's traditional turned-wood dolls. Workshops and craft outlets in the valley sell them and sometimes offer painting demonstrations. Prices are fixed; bargaining is not customary in Japan.
Where to go next?
- Sendai — Tohoku's largest city, roughly 30–40 minutes away, with shopping, dining and major transport links.
- Sakunami Onsen — Another hot spring resort in western Sendai, a good pairing for an onsen-hopping trip.
- Matsushima — The famous pine-island bay, around an hour away, one of Japan's classic scenic "three great views."
- Yamadera — The dramatic clifftop temple complex, reachable by train and road via Sendai.
- Zao Onsen — A mountain hot spring and ski resort, a scenic onward trip into the Zao range.
