Kesennuma
Miyagi, Japan
Why visit Kesennuma?
Kesennuma (気仙沼) is a port city on the Sanriku Coast in northeastern Miyagi Prefecture, one of Japan's most important fishing ports. The city is famous for its massive skipjack tuna (katsuo) and shark fin fisheries, and it proudly bears the nickname "Katsuo City." The Kesennuma Bay is surrounded by forested hills and offers a scenic natural harbour.
The city was severely damaged by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, but has undergone extensive reconstruction. The rebuilt waterfront and the resilience of the local fishing community are now part of Kesennuma's story.
Kesennuma has a cool maritime climate with mild summers and cold winters. The best times to visit are summer (July-August) for the famous Kesennuma Minato Festival and autumn (September-October) for seafood season.
