Why visit Naruko?
Naruko (鳴子) is a town in northern Miyagi Prefecture, famous for its Naruko Onsen hot spring resort — one of the most celebrated onsen towns in the Tohoku region. Located in a scenic valley surrounded by forested mountains, Naruko has a history of over 1,000 years as a hot spring destination.
The town is also famous for its traditional kokeshi dolls — Naruko is one of the major kokeshi-producing centres in Japan, and the colourful hand-painted dolls are a beloved symbol of the region. The Naruko Kokeshi Festival in September is a major annual event.
Naruko is surrounded by beautiful nature, including the Naruko Gorge, a scenic ravine with volcanic rock formations and lush vegetation. The area is particularly famous for autumn foliage.
The climate has warm summers and cold, snowy winters. The best times to visit are autumn (October-November) for foliage, winter (December-February) for onsen and snow scenery, and spring (May) for fresh greenery.
