Trivento

Molise, Italy

Why visit Trivento?

Trivento is a hill town in the province of Campobasso, Molise, on the site of the ancient Samnite stronghold known to the Romans as Terventum, a municipium established in the territory of the Pentri Samnites following the Social War of the 1st century BC. The town rose to become a diocesan seat by the 4th century AD. Its cathedral, dedicated to Saints Nazarius, Celsus, and Victor, was built in the 11th century on the site of a pagan temple to Diana and sits at the highest point of the old town; it preserves a 4th- or 5th-century baptistery and a crypt dedicated to St. Castus, divided by columns into seven small naves, with wooden statues, tombstones, frescoes, and a 12th-century lunette depicting the Trinity.
