Why visit Bojano?

Bojano is a town in the province of Campobasso, Molise, on the site of the ancient Samnite settlement of Bovianum (originally Bovaianom), first settled by around the 7th century BCE. It served as the capital of the Pentri, the largest of the Samnite tribes, and played a central role in the Samnite Wars against Rome; it briefly served as a temporary capital during the Social War in 89 BCE before being sacked by Sulla. Under Roman rule it was resettled with veterans of the Legio XI Claudia, giving it the name Bovianum Undecumanorum. After the Lombard conquest the area was given to a group of Bulgars fleeing the Avars around 662 AD, and in the mid-11th century it was conquered by the Norman Hauteville family, becoming the capital of a county.
