Venafro

Molise, Italy

Why visit Venafro?

Venafro is a town in the province of Isernia, Molise, of Samnite origin — a stronghold of the Pentri tribe that Rome took time to subdue, and the site of a decisive battle during the Social War in 89 BC. In Roman times Venafro became renowned for its olive oil, which ancient writers including Cato the Elder (who owned a villa with olive groves in the area) and Horace praised as among the finest in the empire; Pliny the Elder rated it the best olive oil in the Roman world. The remains of the elliptical Verlasce Amphitheatre are still visible in the center of the modern town, one of its main archaeological attractions. Venafro is also known locally as the "town of 33 churches" for its historic center's concentration of churches.
