Agnone

Molise, Italy

Why visit Agnone?

Agnone is a hill town in the province of Isernia, in Molise, with a population of around 5,000. It is best known as the home of the Pontificia Fonderia Marinelli, a bell foundry that traces its origins to Venetian bronze-casting families who settled in Agnone in the 12th century, with the oldest documented record of a Marinelli-cast bell dating to 1339. The foundry still uses the traditional lost-wax casting method and was granted the title of Pontifical Foundry by the Vatican in 1924; the Roman Catholic Church accounts for the large majority of its orders today, and its bells have been sent to sites including St. Peter's Square and the United Nations building in New York.
