Termoli

Molise, Italy

Why visit Termoli?

Termoli is a coastal town in the province of Campobasso, Molise, on the Adriatic Sea, with a population of around 33,000 that expanded quickly after World War II. It is known for its fortified old town (Borgo Antico) set on a rocky promontory, its sandy beaches, and as a gateway to the Tremiti Islands. The old town's narrow cobbled streets include the rejecelle, an alley so narrow that only one person can pass through at a time.

How do you get there?

Termoli has its own train station on the Adriatic line connecting Bologna and Lecce, with regional and long-distance trains from Pescara and Bari, within walking distance of both the beach and the old town.

The old town and station are within walking distance of the beaches; the historic center's narrow streets are best explored on foot.

What are the things to do?

  • Castello Svevo (Swabian Castle) — a 13th-century castle at the edge of the historic center, of Norman origin with significant enhancements by Frederick II of Swabia in 1240 after damage from a Venetian fleet; offers views over the beach.
  • Borgo Antico — the fortified old town on a rocky promontory, including the cathedral and narrow streets such as the rejecelle.
