Sepino

Molise, Italy

Why visit Sepino?

Sepino is a town in the province of Campobasso, Molise, about 15 km south of the provincial capital, adjacent to the archaeological site of Saepinum (modern Altilia), one of the best-preserved Roman towns in Italy. Saepinum began as a Samnite settlement before its conquest by Rome in 293 BC during the Samnite Wars; its walls, built in opus reticulatum, date to between 2 BC and 4 AD, constructed under the future emperor Tiberius. The roughly 12-hectare walled site has four monumental gates flanked by circular towers, and preserves a forum, basilica, baths, and theatre, with more recent excavations (2023) uncovering an elaborate domus with a monumental entrance onto the decumanus maximus.
