Scapoli
Molise, Italy
Why visit Scapoli?
Scapoli is a small village of around 500 residents in the mountainous interior of Molise, known as the world capital of the zampogna, the traditional Italian bagpipe. The National Museum of Zampogne, opened in 2002, displays bagpipes from different eras and regions across three floors, including a reproduction of a traditional artisan workshop, drawing on instruments from Scapoli and the surrounding Mainarde area as well as from elsewhere in Italy and abroad. Since July 1975 the town has hosted the Festa della Zampogna each year, typically on the last weekend of July, drawing bagpipe enthusiasts and performers from around the world. Master craftsmen in the districts of Fontecostanza and the old town center still build zampogne using traditional techniques and woods such as olive, cherry, and plum.
