Numana

Numana is a coastal town in the province of Ancona, on the Conero Riviera at the southern foot of Monte Conero. The site was inhabited from prehistoric times and later served as a port for the ancient Piceni people, who traded here with Greek merchants. The town is divided into two parts: Numana Alta, set on the green slopes of Monte Conero overlooking a pebble beach, and Numana Bassa, stretching along the shore near the small harbor. The wider Conero Riviera, shared with neighboring Sirolo, is known for its rocky, wooded coastline and beaches such as Due Sorelle, accessible only by boat or on foot, named for a pair of large sea stacks just offshore.

Numana has no railway station of its own; the nearest is Ancona, from which local bus services run along the coast to Numana. By car, it is reached from Ancona via the SS16, following the coastline around Monte Conero.

Numana Alta on the hill and Numana Bassa by the sea are both walkable individually; moving between the two involves a climb. The wider Conero Riviera coastline, including beaches like Due Sorelle, is best reached by boat or on foot along coastal paths.

The Conero Riviera around Numana is known for its rocky, pine-covered coastline and beaches, including Due Sorelle, a beach named for a pair of sea stacks just offshore and reachable only by boat or trail. Numana's split layout — hilltop Numana Alta and seafront Numana Bassa — reflects its long history as a Piceni-era port. Nearby Sirolo holds one of the region's largest Piceni-era archaeological necropolises, including the 6th-century-BC Tomb of the so-called "Queen of Sirolo."
