Offagna

Marche, Italy

Why visit Offagna?

Offagna is a small medieval village in the province of Ancona, close to Monte Conero. From the 12th century it served as one of Ancona's main defensive outposts protecting the city's inland approaches, and its history was shaped by the rivalry between Ancona and neighboring Osimo. Its landmark is the Rocca di Offagna, a quadrangular fortress built between 1454 and 1456 on Ancona's orders to secure the contested territory; the fortress combines medieval defensive elements with features designed for gunpowder-era warfare, including around fifty positions for bombards. Because Offagna largely kept its defensive layout intact rather than expanding after the Renaissance, the village still feels compact and clearly medieval today.

How do you get there?

Offagna has no railway station; the nearest is in Ancona, from which the village is reached by road inland.

The village is small and easily explored on foot.

What are the things to do?

The Rocca di Offagna dominates the village: a mid-15th-century quadrangular fortress with an intact keep (mastio), surviving defensive walls with a walkable patrol path and swallow-tailed battlements, and bombard positions from its gunpowder-era upgrades. The keep now houses the Museum of Ancient Weapons.
