Offida

Marche, Italy

Why visit Offida?

Offida is a hill town in the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche, known above all for its centuries-old tradition of bobbin lace (merletto a tombolo). The craft is said to trace back to the 15th century and Benedictine nuns, with the earliest documented reference to Offida's lace dating to 1511; a dedicated lace school opened in the town in 1910, and Offida is among the Italian municipalities backing a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage bid for Italian lace. The town's other landmark is the church of Santa Maria della Rocca, a 14th-century Romanesque-Gothic building perched on a tufa outcrop above the surrounding countryside, whose crypt preserves frescoes attributed to the so-called "Master of Offida." The Teatro Serpente Aureo, an early-19th-century horseshoe-shaped theatre nicknamed "La Bomboniera" by locals, is part of a proposed UNESCO listing for historic theatres of central Italy.
