Ripatransone

Ripatransone is a hilltop town of around 4,000 people in the province of Ascoli Piceno, set between the valleys of the Menocchia torrent and the Tesino river with sweeping views over the surrounding countryside — earning it the nickname "il Belvedere del Piceno." Its name derives from a local feudal lord, Transone, who is said to have founded a castle on the hill; the site has been inhabited since prehistoric times, declined after the Roman conquest, and regained importance in the Middle Ages when several fortified settlements on the hill were unified into a single town in 1096. Ripatransone is also known for an unnamed alley in its old Roflano quarter, popularly promoted as "il vicolo più stretto d'Italia" (the narrowest alley in Italy) — about 43 cm wide, narrowing to 38 cm at its tightest point — a claim also contested by a few other Italian towns.

The hilltop historic centre is compact and walkable, including the narrow lanes of the old Roflano quarter.

Ripatransone's best-known sight is an unnamed alley in the Roflano quarter, promoted since its rediscovery in 1968 as "il vicolo più stretto d'Italia" (the narrowest alley in Italy) at around 43 cm wide, narrowing to 38 cm — the town's tourism office issues a certificate to visitors who walk its length. The town's hilltop setting between the Menocchia and Tesino valleys, which earned it the nickname "il Belvedere del Piceno," makes its panoramic viewpoints a draw in their own right.
