Vogar
Suðurnes, Iceland
Why visit Vogar?
Vogar is a village on the north coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula, roughly midway between Reykjavík and Keflavík, along the coastline known as Vatnsleysuströnd. It is mentioned in Landnámabók, the medieval account of Iceland's settlement. The rich fishing grounds off Vogastapi nearby were historically known as "Gullkistan" (chest of gold), and by the end of the 19th century Vogar was the largest village on the Reykjanes Peninsula, larger than Keflavík and Grindavík combined. Its harbour proved too small for the motorised vessels that later replaced traditional rowing boats, and the village's fishing fortunes declined through the early 20th century as a result.
