Hafnir

Suðurnes, Iceland

Why visit Hafnir?

Hafnir is a small settlement on the southwestern tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula, taking its name from two now-deserted farms, Sandhöfn and Kirkjuhöfn. It was a significant fishing village until around 1900, and is among the oldest inhabited areas of the peninsula — archaeological finds suggest the area may have been settled soon after Iceland itself was colonised in the 9th century. Nearby lies Kalmanstjörn, an abandoned farm whose ruins still stand by the lake of the same name.

How do you get there?

Accessible by road from Keflavík and the wider Reykjanes Peninsula.

Walking is best for the compact centre; a car is needed to reach nearby sights along the peninsula.

What are the things to do?

The nearby Bridge Between Continents spans a rift in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, marking the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Gunnuhver, Iceland's largest mud pool, and the abandoned Kalmanstjörn farm ruins are also within reach of Hafnir.

Walking the coastal lava fields and tide pools near Hafnir, and visiting the Bridge Between Continents and Gunnuhver geothermal area, are the main activities in the area.
