Keflavik

Keflavík is a town on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland, founded by Scottish merchants in the 16th century and long built around fishing and fish processing. In 1995 it merged with neighbouring Njarðvík and Hafnir to form the municipality of Reykjanesbær. Keflavík International Airport, Iceland's main international gateway, sits just outside the town; it began as a US military airfield in the 1940s, serving as a transatlantic refuelling stop during World War II, and later hosted the Cold War-era Naval Air Station Keflavik. The town also has a notable local music history and several museums, including the Icelandic Museum of Rock 'n' Roll and the Viking World Museum.

Icelandic maritime climate — cool summers, mild winters, with frequent weather changes.

Keflavík International Airport, adjacent to the town, is Iceland's main gateway for international flights.

Walking is best for the compact centre. Car or taxi for outlying areas, including the airport and the Blue Lagoon.

The Icelandic Museum of Rock 'n' Roll documents the town's outsized role in Iceland's music scene, and the Viking World Museum covers early Icelandic settlement and seafaring. The harbour area is associated with local folklore, including the tale of a "giantess in the cave."

Visiting the town's museums and harbour, and using Keflavík as a base for day trips around the Reykjanes Peninsula, are common activities.
