Why visit Grindavik?
Grindavík is a fishing town on the southern coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula, historically best known as the gateway to the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa and as one of Iceland's important fishing ports. Since November 2023, Grindavík and the surrounding area have been the site of a prolonged volcanic crisis: repeated Sundhnúkur crater-series eruptions and related earthquakes forced the evacuation of the town's roughly 4,000 residents, and the town has been largely uninhabited since. Access has been reopened intermittently, including guided visits, but conditions on the ground change with each new bout of seismic activity — travellers should check official Icelandic authorities (Safetravel.is) for the current status before planning a visit, rather than relying on any static description here.
"open/closed" status in older sources as current — verify directly with Safetravel.is or Icelandic civil protection before travel.
