Sandgerdi

Suðurnes, Iceland

Why visit Sandgerdi?

Sandgerði is a fishing village on the Reykjanes Peninsula, part of the UNESCO Reykjanes Global Geopark. It developed as a fishing community in the second half of the 19th century, as motorboats replaced rowing boats, and remains one of Iceland's significant fishing towns. In 2020 Sandgerði merged with neighbouring Garður to form the municipality of Suðurnesjabær. The town is home to the Fræðasetrið (Nature Center), also known as the Suðurnes Science and Learning Center, a museum and research institute studying marine life, seabirds, and coastal ecology, run in cooperation with the University of Iceland.
