Covering about 500 km² of wet evergreen tropical rainforest, it lies in the area of Ghana's highest rainfall and is regarded as the country's most biodiverse forest — home to around 800 vascular plant species, 640 butterfly species, 45 mammal species (including forest elephant, bongo, leopard, and yellow-backed duiker), over 50 amphibian species, 310 bird species, and 9 primate species including the Roloway diana monkey, Geoffrey's pied colobus, and white-naped sooty mangabey. The Ankasa, Nini, and Suhien Rivers run through the reserve, with rapids and waterfalls along their courses.
