Beyin

Western, Ghana

Why visit Beyin?

Beyin is a village in the Jomoro District of Ghana's Western Region, about 90 km west of Takoradi, and the departure point for canoe trips to Nzulezo, a village built entirely on stilts and platforms over Lake Tadane roughly 5 km inland. Nzulezo's name means "water surface" in the Nzema language; local legend holds it was founded by settlers from Oualata (in present-day Mauritania) who followed a snail to the site, and it is thought to have been built over water originally for protection during conflict. The village was placed on Ghana's UNESCO World Heritage tentative list in 2000 for its rare stilt-and-platform architecture and the traditions tied to the lake, including a taboo on using or working the lake every Thursday, a day considered sacred to it. The canoe journey from Beyin to Nzulezo takes roughly an hour through rainforest and lake channels.
