Why visit Dixcove?

Dixcove is a fishing port in the Western Region built around the promontory fishing community of Infuma, overlooked by Fort Metal Cross. The fort, originally Fort Dixcove, was built by the English between 1683 and 1697 to secure a share of the regional gold trade and to compete with the nearby Brandenburger (German) fort at Princestown; the local Infuma people, whose allegiances shifted between Britain and the Netherlands, besieged it repeatedly during construction, including twice in 1712. It passed to Dutch control in 1868 (renamed "Metalen Kruis," or Metal Cross, after a Dutch gunboat) and back to Britain in 1872, serving over the years as a trading post, ship-repair depot, and a site tied to the Atlantic slave trade. Along with Ghana's other coastal forts and castles, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
