Why visit Axim?
Axim is a historic coastal town in Ghana's Western Region, near the mouth of the Ankobra River. The Portuguese first built a trading post here in 1503, abandoned it under local attack, then in 1515 built Fort Santo Antonio (Fort St. Anthony) on a promontory closer to the river — the second Portuguese fort on the Gold Coast after Elmina Castle. Built partly to control the regional gold and timber trade, the fort withstood repeated attacks, including a period after Elmina fell to the Dutch in 1637, before the Dutch finally captured it in 1642 and later expanded it; it passed to the British in 1872 along with the rest of the Dutch Gold Coast. Fort Santo Antonio was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 as part of Ghana's group of forts and castles, and is now open to the public.
