How do you get there?

Maré is accessible by air from Nouméa (Air Calédonie) with flights to La Roche Airport. A ferry service connects Maré to Lifou and Nouméa, though services are less frequent than to other Loyalty Islands.

A car or scooter is recommended for getting around Maré. Roads are mostly unpaved and can be rough in places. Rental vehicles are available at the airport.

Where to eat?

Accommodation-based dining is common — most lodges and guesthouses provide meals. Bougna and fresh seafood are the staple dishes. There are a few small eateries near the airport and La Roche.

Where to drink?

Fresh coconut water, tropical juices, and local beer are available. Bottled water is recommended.

Accommodation consists mainly of tribal lodges (cases), guesthouses, and a few bungalows. Options are limited, so advance booking is essential.

What should you buy?

Maré's artisans produce woven items, shell jewelry, and wood carvings. Vanilla is also grown and sold here. The weekly market offers local produce.
