How do you get there?

Lifou is accessible by air from Nouméa (Air Calédonie) with flights to Ouanaham Airport, near the town of Wé. A catamaran ferry service operates from Nouméa (about 4 hours). Cruise ships occasionally visit.

A car is recommended for exploring Lifou's scattered villages and beaches. Rental cars are available near the airport and in Wé. Bicycles and scooters can also be rented.

Where to eat?

Restaurants serve fresh seafood, bougna (traditional Kanak dish cooked in earth ovens), and French-inspired cuisine. Vanilla features in many desserts.

Coconut water and fresh tropical juices are abundant. Local beer (Number One) and wine are available at restaurants and shops.

Accommodation ranges from beachside bungalows and lodges to guesthouses in the traditional villages (cases). There are a few small hotels in the Wé area.

Lifou is famous for its vanilla. Pottery, wood carvings, woven bags, and shell jewelry are available at village cooperatives.
