Sherkole

Sherkole is a remote settlement in the Benshangul-Gumaz Region of western Ethiopia, located near the Sudan border in the Blue Nile lowlands. It is one of the least-accessible towns in the region and is primarily known for artisanal gold mining, which takes place in the surrounding hills. The population is predominantly Gumuz, an ethnic group with a distinct language and agricultural traditions.

By Plane

The nearest airport is Asosa (ASO IATA), 150 km north, with domestic flights from Addis Ababa.

By Car / Road

Access is via rough 4WD tracks from Asosa or Mankush. The journey from Asosa takes 5–6 hours in the dry season. Roads are often impassable during the rainy season (June–September).

The settlement is walkable. Beyond it, travel is by 4WD or on foot.

• Traditional gold mines: Artisanal gold mining is the main economic activity, with miners using simple tools and mercury to extract gold from the hills.

• Gumuz villages: Traditional Gumuz homesteads with thatched roofs, set among cassava and sorghum fields.

• Gold mining observation: Watch traditional mining techniques (with permission from local community leaders).

• Learn about Gumuz culture: The Gumuz have a rich oral tradition and distinctive music.

Bring all food supplies from Asosa.

Bottled water is essential; carry ample supplies.

Camping or very basic communal accommodation by arrangement with local leaders.

Gold dust or nuggets (informal market). Basic provisions are scarce.
