Benshangul-Gumaz is a regional state in western Ethiopia, bordering Sudan along the Blue Nile basin. It is one of Ethiopia's least-visited regions, characterised by lowland savannah, the Blue Nile gorge, and diverse ethnic groups including the Berta, Gumuz, Shinasha, and Amhara peoples. The region's capital is Asosa.
The landscape is a mix of wooded savannah, river valleys, and granite inselbergs. The Blue Nile (Abay) River flows through the southern part of the region, creating a dramatic topography. The climate is hot and semi-arid in the lowlands, with a rainy season from June to September. Benshangul-Gumaz is known for its gold mining, coffee production, and national parks.
When is the best time to visit?
The dry season (October to May) is the best time to visit, when roads are passable and wildlife viewing is optimal. The rainy season (June–September) brings heavy downpours that can make travel difficult, though the landscape turns green.

Buses from Addis Ababa connect to Asosa (700 km, 12–14 hours). Within the region, shared minibuses and bajajs are the main transport. Many smaller towns are reached by unpaved roads that require a 4WD or become impassable in the rains.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
The cuisine of Benshangul-Gumaz reflects its diverse ethnic makeup. Berta and Gumuz communities rely on sorghum and maize porridge, often served with spicy sauces made from greens and okra. Along the Blue Nile, fresh fish is a speciality. Ethiopian staples such as injera are also common in towns.
What is the culture like?
The Berta people hold an annual New Year festival called Bamba, celebrated in Asosa and Bambasi with traditional music, dance, and feasting. The Gumuz people have harvest ceremonies involving bull jumping and communal meals. Islamic festivals (the population includes many Muslims) such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are also observed.
