How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Asosa (ASO IATA), about 120 km west, with domestic flights from Addis Ababa.

By Car / Road

Kamashi is reached by unpaved roads from Asosa (120 km, 3–4 hours) or from Nekemte in the east. The road quality is poor and a 4WD vehicle is recommended, especially in the rainy season.

The town is small and walkable. For travel to surrounding villages, shared minibuses or bajajs are available.

What are the things to do?

  • Kamashi River: The river is the lifeline of the area, used for fishing, irrigation, and bathing. It is scenic, especially after the rains.

  • Kamashi Market: A small roadside market serving local farmers and traders, busiest on weekly market days.

  • Surrounding lowlands: The landscape of wooded savannah and riverine forest is typical of western Ethiopia.

  • Fishing: The river supports local fishing — a good activity for those interested in rural life.

  • Village walks: The area around Kamashi is peaceful for walking tours through agricultural communities.
