Why visit Damanhur?

Damanhur is the capital of Beheira Governorate, a Nile Delta city of roughly 330,000 people on the El-Mahmoudeya Canal, about 160 km northwest of Cairo between the capital and Alexandria. Its history reaches back to Egypt's Old Kingdom, when it served as capital of Lower Egypt's 7th nome and centre of worship for the god Horus — its Arabic name descends from Coptic p-Timinhor, "the settlement of Horus," and classical geographers such as Strabo and Ptolemy knew it as Hermopolis Mikra ("Small Hermes-city"). It became a provincial capital again under the Fatimids in the 11th century and later grew as a caravan stop between Cairo and Alexandria. A major earthquake damaged the city in 1302, and its fortifications were later restored under the Mamluk sultan Barquq. In 1799, Damanhur's residents rose up against the French occupation, drawing severe reprisal. Today it is one of the Delta's principal trading centres for cotton and rice, with agricultural industries — cotton ginning, potato processing, date processing — anchoring the local economy alongside the surrounding farmland.
