Kafr El Dawwar

Kafr El Dawwar is an industrial city in Beheira Governorate, roughly midway between Alexandria and Damanhur. It is historically significant as the site of the Battle of Kafr El Dawwar in August 1882, where Egyptian forces under Ahmed Orabi held a fortified line against the British army for five weeks during the Anglo-Egyptian War, forcing the British to shift their advance toward Cairo via the Suez Canal and Tel El Kebir instead. In the 20th century the city became one of the region's major industrial centres, anchored by Misr Spinning, Weaving & Beida Dyers, a large textile combine founded in 1938 that remains the city's biggest employer; electricity generation and fruit-packing are also significant local industries. The wider district is still framed by Nile Delta agricultural land, growing cotton, rice, maize, and vegetables.
