Hosh Issa

Hosh Issa is a district (markaz) town in Beheira Governorate, in Egypt's western Nile Delta. It takes its name from Hosh Ibn Issa, a sheriff whose lineage was traced to the Prophet Muhammad, and it is recorded to have resisted a Mamluk invasion historically. The 1885 Census of Egypt listed it as a nahiyah in the district of Abu Hummus with a population of roughly 1,480. The wider district has drawn archaeological attention in recent years: excavations at the nearby Tell Al-Abqain site have uncovered New Kingdom–era military barracks and weapon stores, and in 2026 archaeologists identified a 5th-century CE monastic guesthouse from the early Coptic period at the Qalaye site near Hosh Issa. Like the rest of Beheira, the local economy rests on Nile Delta agriculture — cotton, rice, maize, and vegetables — grown in the fields surrounding the town.

The Tell Al-Abqain archaeological site and the Qalaye monastic-guesthouse site lie within Hosh Issa district and have been the subject of recent excavations, though they are working dig sites rather than developed visitor attractions.
