Why visit Edku?

Edku (also spelled Idku) is a coastal city and district center in Beheira Governorate, Egypt, situated on a narrow sandy spit separating Abu Qir Bay in the Mediterranean Sea to the north from Lake Idku to the south. Located 38 km east of Alexandria and 22 km west of Rosetta, the town occupies a strategic strip along Egypt's western Nile Delta coast. Lake Idku, a brackish lagoon spanning roughly 150 square kilometers, occupies part of the ancient Canopic branch of the Nile.

Settled since the Pharaonic era within the province of Ra-Amenati, Edku entered Islamic history during the 7th-century conquest led by 'Amr ibn al-'As. The town's economy relies on Mediterranean and lagoon fisheries, rice cultivation, date palm harvesting, and traditional cotton handloom weaving. Northeast of the urban center stands the Egyptian Liquefied Natural Gas (ELNG) export terminal, operational since 2005 as a key energy hub.

Travelers come to Edku to observe working fishing communities, visit the morning seafood auction in nearby El-Ma'adeya, and view migratory birds along the lake margin. The city operates as a functional provincial trade center without international resort development.
