Itay El Barud

Itay El Barud is the administrative centre of its namesake markaz in Beheira Governorate, about 100 km northwest of Cairo in the Nile Delta. Its name is Coptic in origin — from "Eiti," which evolved into "Aitiyeh" — and the town appears in historical sources as early as the 13th century CE under variants of that name. Administrative authority for the district was moved here from the nearby town of Delengat in 1884, owing to Itay El Barud's position directly on the railway line; the district was formally renamed Itay El Barud Markaz in 1896. As with the rest of Beheira, the surrounding economy is built on Delta agriculture — cotton, rice, maize, and vegetables — with fields encircling the town centre.
