Abu al-Matamir

Al Buḩayrah, Egypt

Why visit Abu al-Matamir?

Abu al-Matamir is a town in Beheira Governorate, about 50 km southwest of Alexandria, and the administrative center of its own district. Its name comes from the Arabic "matāmīr" (underground grain-storage pits), reflecting its historical role as a granary going back to Roman times, before the Islamic conquest of Egypt in the 7th century. Several ancient Pharaonic-era cemeteries have been identified in the vicinity, including Tell Makboura, Tell El Jil, Kom El Adda, and Tell Trugi. Beheira is Egypt's leading governorate for fruit and vegetable production (citrus, potatoes, tomatoes, artichokes, watermelons, beans, and peppers among them), and Abu al-Matamir's local economy is agricultural, serving both farming communities and nearby Bedouin groups.
