Kutu

Mai-Ndombe, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Kutu?

Kutu is the headquarters town of Kutu Territory in Mai-Ndombe province, sitting where the Fimi River meets the southern tip of Lake Mai-Ndombe. The territory runs roughly between the Lukeni River to the east, the Kasaï River to the west, and the Fimi River to the north, and includes extensive forested land supporting timber concessions and informal logging. Lake Mai-Ndombe itself covers about 2,300 km², a shallow acidic blackwater lake within the Tumba-Ngiri-Maindombe wetlands, the world's largest Ramsar-listed Wetland of International Importance; it supports otters, marsh mongooses, crocodiles, turtles, waterbirds, and several endemic fish species, and the lake-and-river system is a major transport corridor given the region's poor road network. The local economy is based on agriculture, fishing, and small-scale trade. The climate is tropical with a rainy and a dry season.
