Oshwe

Mai-Ndombe, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Oshwe?

Oshwe is the headquarters town of Oshwe Territory in Mai-Ndombe province, on the Lukenie River, with a 2012 population estimated at around 22,600. The Lukenie flows from the east through the southern part of the district and joins the Fimi River, which in turn drains Lake Mai-Ndombe and continues west to meet the Kasaï at Mushie; river barges from Kinshasa historically travel up the Congo, Kasaï, and Fimi rivers to reach the Lukenie landing at Kole, a journey of six to twelve weeks. Oshwe was a remote administrative post in the Belgian Congo from the early 20th century, valued for the riverine access the Lukenie provided. The town is served by Oshwe Airport (ICAO: FZBD), at an elevation of about 350 m. The climate is tropical with a rainy and a dry season.
