Yumbi

Mai-Ndombe, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Yumbi?

Yumbi is a town and territory on the eastern bank of the Congo River in Mai-Ndombe Province, western DRC, between Bolobo and Lukolela. It is the administrative headquarters of Yumbi Territory and has an estimated population in the tens of thousands. The area was historically settled by Bantu-speaking peoples, including Sakata, Ntomba, and Nunu communities, who depended on fishing, hunting, and small-scale farming along Lake Mai-Ndombe and its feeder rivers; the Bangi (Bobangi) language has deep roots in this stretch of the river. Under the Congo Free State, the region fell within territory Leopold II claimed as a rubber-gathering crown domain. Mai-Ndombe itself is one of DRC's newest provinces, carved out of the former Bandundu Province in the 2015 reorganization.

Yumbi has faced serious hardship in recent years, including a deadly 2018 outbreak of intercommunal violence in the town and nearby villages. Visitors should check current conditions and travel advisories before planning a trip to this area.
