Shangri-La

Yunnan Sheng, China

Why visit Shangri-La?

Shangri-La (香格里拉; Xiānggélǐlā), formerly known as Zhongdian (中甸), is a county-level city in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of northwestern Yunnan Province. At 3,300 m elevation, it is named after the mythical paradise in James Hilton's 1933 novel Lost Horizon. The city sits in a broad valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains, high-altitude grasslands, and the sacred Kawa Karpo (Meili Snow Mountain, 6,740 m), one of the most revered peaks in Tibetan Buddhism. Shangri-La is the cultural heart of Tibetan Yunnan, with its massive Tibetan Buddhist monastery (Ganden Sumtseling), traditional Tibetan villages, and the Songzanlin Monastery, often called the "Little Potala Palace." The area is also the starting point for treks into the remote Tiger Leaping Gorge and the Three Parallel Rivers region. The best time to visit is April–October.
