Why visit Shilin?
Shilin (石林, literally "Stone Forest") is a geological landscape of grey limestone pillars rising up to 30 metres from the red soil 90 km southeast of Kunming. Formed roughly 270 million years ago when the region was submerged beneath a shallow Permian sea, tectonic uplift and water erosion dissolved the carbonate rock into fluted pinnacles, deep fissures, sinkholes, and subterranean caves across the 400-square-kilometre national scenic area. The area is the ancestral territory of the Sani people, a branch of the Yi ethnic minority, whose folklore centers on Ashima—a legendary woman who turned into stone to remain with her ancestral land. In 2007, UNESCO inscribed the Stone Forest as part of the South China Karst World Heritage Site.
The name "Shilin" refers both to Shilin Yi Autonomous County (石林彝族自治县) and the national scenic area located 10 km east of the county seat. Most travelers use the town primarily as a transit or lodging hub to explore the surrounding parks. The primary ticketed area includes the Major Stone Forest (Dashilin, 大石林) and Minor Stone Forest (Xiaoshilin, 小石林). Additional karst formations and recreational areas—including Naigu Stone Forest, Zhiyun Cave, Changhu Lake, and Dadie Waterfall—are distributed across the wider county and require local buses or taxis to visit.
Positioned on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau at an elevation of approximately 1,750 metres, Shilin experiences mild weather throughout the year paired with strong solar radiation. The clearest conditions occur in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Summer brings monsoonal rainstorms, while winter brings sunny days with brisk mornings.
