Yunnan Sheng, China

Why visit Tengchong?

Tengchong (腾冲; Téngchōng) is a county-level city in western Yunnan Province, about 160 km southwest of Baoshan near the Myanmar border. The city is famous for its volcanic hot springs, having some of the best geothermal bathing in China. The surrounding landscape is dramatic, with extinct volcanic cones, lava fields, and the lush Gaoligong Mountains nearby. Tengchong is also known for Heshun Ancient Town (和顺古镇), one of the best-preserved and most beautiful traditional Chinese towns, with Ming and Qing dynasty architecture. The city has a poignant WWII history — it was the site of the bloody Battle of Tengchong (1944) and has the Yaochong National Martyr Cemetery. Tengchong's climate is spring-like year-round. The best time to visit is March–October.
