Shaxi

Why visit Shaxi?
Shaxi (沙溪; Shāxī) is a historic town in the Jianchuan County of western Yunnan Province, about 120 km north of Dali. Once a bustling trading stop on the Ancient Tea Horse Road (connecting Yunnan to Tibet and Southeast Asia), Shaxi fell into obscurity in the 20th century. This obscurity turned out to be its salvation — the town has been meticulously restored by a joint Chinese–Swiss heritage project and is now often called the best-preserved Tea Horse Road town in Yunnan. Unlike the tourist crowds of Lijiang and Dali, Shaxi retains a peaceful, authentic atmosphere. The beautifully restored Sideng Market Square, with its old opera stage, weathered temples, and cobbled streets, is the heart of the town. The surrounding countryside is stunning, with the Shibaoshan Mountain and its ancient grottoes nearby. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best times to visit.
