Why visit Jianshui?

Jianshui (建水; Jiànshuǐ) is a historic city in southern Yunnan Province, about 200 km south of Kunming. With a history stretching back over 1,200 years, Jianshui is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in Yunnan. Its magnificent Confucius Temple is the second-largest in China (after Qufu), and the city is dotted with Ming and Qing dynasty gates, temples, gardens, and traditional courtyard houses. Jianshui has avoided the mass tourism of Lijiang and Dali, offering a more authentic experience of old Yunnan. The city is also famous for its Zhu Family Garden, the elegant Shuanglong Bridge (Double Dragon Bridge, a 17-arch Qing dynasty bridge), and its local ceramics. The climate is mild year-round. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best times to visit.
