Liuku

Yunnan Sheng, China

Why visit Liuku?

Liuku (六库; Liùkù) is the administrative centre of the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture in western Yunnan Province, situated in the deep gorge of the Salween River (Nujiang). The town lies at 900 m elevation in one of the most dramatic river valleys in the world — the Nu River Valley (怒江大峡谷), often called the "Grand Canyon of the East" or "Heavenly Gorge." The river roars through a steep, 300-km-long gorge flanked by the Gaoligong and Biluo snow mountain ranges. Liuku is the starting point for adventures into this remote region, home to the Lisu, Nu, and Dulong minority groups. The area is known for its wild beauty, waterfalls, suspension bridges, and the famous Pianma wind gap. The climate is subtropical in the valley bottom, becoming alpine at higher elevations. The dry season (October–May) is the best time to visit.
