Gejiu

Yunnan Sheng, China

Why visit Gejiu?

Gejiu (个旧; Gèjiù) is a county-level city in southern Yunnan Province, about 280 km south of Kunming. For much of the 20th century, Gejiu was known as the "Tin Capital of China" — it was the world's largest tin mining centre, with a history of mining dating back to the Han dynasty. The city's mining heyday (especially under French colonial influence in the early 1900s) left a legacy of French-colonial architecture, including a distinctive railway station on the historic Kunming–Hai Phong railway. Today, Gejiu is a quieter place, with a nostalgic atmosphere, tree-lined streets, and a slower pace. The city is surrounded by the conical karst hills typical of southern Yunnan. The climate is mild year-round.
